Overview

The Frontiers of Science Symposium - in partnership with the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS), CIFAR, and the Royal Society of Canada (RSC) - aims to foster interdisciplinary discussion and the exchange of ideas between researchers from Japan and Canada. The symposium will highlight important intersections between researchers in both countries, with an emphasis on the most cutting-edge scientific topics and revolutionary ideas shaping the world today from various disciplines. The symposium will include sessions on:

  • Life on the Edge: Living in Extreme Environments
  • Black Holes
  • Sleep & the Boundaries of Consciousness
  • Virtual & Augmented Reality
  • Smart Materials & their Applications
  • Big Data in a Hyper-Mediated World

Each session at the symposium will focus on emerging leaders from both Canada and Japan whose research areas complement and intersect with each other and with the themes named above. Researchers from different disciplines are invited to participate and will be expected to attend all of the sessions to facilitate interdisciplinary exchange.

Host Organizations

Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS) was established in 1932 with an endowment from the Emperor Showa for the promotion of science. After undergoing changes of its legal status, it is currently the core research funding agency in Japan which supports scientific research of all fields established under the national law.

The Royal Society of Canada (RSC) was established in 1882 as a collegium of distinguished Canadian scholars and scientists. Over the years, more than 4000 men and women have been elected as Members of the RSC to one of the RSC’s three bilingual Academies or the College of New Scholars. Members are elected from the social sciences and humanities, the natural science and engineering, and the health sciences and artistic fields. The RSC’s mission is to serve Canada and Canadians by recognizing Canada’s leading intellecturals, scholars, researchers and artists and by mobilizing them in open discussion and debate, to advance knowledge, encourage integrated interdisciplinary understandings and to address issues that are critical to Canada and Canadians.

CIFAR is a Canadian-based, global charitable organization that convenes extraordinary minds to address science and humanity's most important questions. By supporting long-term interdisciplinary collaboration, CIFAR provides researchers with an unparalleled environment of trust, transparency and knowledge sharing. Our time-tested model inspires new directions of inquiry, accelerates discovery and yields breakthroughs across borders and academic disciplines.

Posters

Presenting a poster provides you with the opportunity to engage with other attendees, share your research, and start conversations that may lead to future collaborations.  Your poster enables you to discuss very specific aspects of your work.

For best results, please prepare your poster in vertical orientation, 36'' x 48'' (maximum 3 feet wide x 4 feet high). The posters will be mounted on boards which cannot be rotated. Please prepare your materials to fit the indicated width and height.  Poster boards will be available in Room MB 252 (Max Bell building) for the poster session on Monday, March 2, 2020, and mounting supplies will be provided.

The list of poster abstracts will be provided here (the list is still being compiled). Check back closer to the meeting date.

Presentations

If you are making a PowerPoint presentation at this meeting, please note that presentation slides should be in 16:9 format for best compatibility with the Banff Centre audio visual system.
