Overview

AI Powered Information Ecosystems and Democracy

AI-powered information ecosystems (like social media, search engines, or content-sharing platforms) have transformed democratic institutions around the world, increasingly shaping the social interactions and information consumption of individuals in many countries.  However, the potential risks AI poses to democratic institutions and values are often not well-understood, in part due to the tension between potential benefits and harms to society.

This workshop will engage diverse groups of researchers from academia and industry with practitioners and civil society representatives, to encourage collaborations between those involved in the research and development of computations tools with those with focused expertise in policy, journalism, civil rights, and democratic values.

Workshop Leads:

  • Derek Ruths, McGill University, Canada
  • Seda Guerses, University of Leuven, Belgium
  • Alexandra Olteanu, Microsoft Research, US & Canada
  • Joris van Hoboken, University of Amsterdam, The Netherlands
